Around a month ago, marketers utilizing Instagram received some positive news. The social platform announced that Insights and Analytics, Post Promotion, and Business profiles were finally going to be available to marketers through an update coming soon called Instagram for Business.

Have another social media need? We can help.

Although the company did not initially say how soon the tools would be available, brands are now able to access them by connecting their Facebook page (remember that Facebook owns Instagram) to their Instagram account. Don’t know how to make that happen? We’ve got you covered. We created a step-by-step guide to switch your account to Business, and will fill you in on the benefits of the update and what to look out for.

Brands can now access Instagram for Business accounts by connecting their Facebook page to their Instagram account.

How to Switch to Instagram for Business

Making the switch is pretty easy. Navigate to your profile in Instagram (for mobile), and under Account Settings you’ll see an option called “Switch to Business Profile.”

You will then be asked to log in to Facebook within the app.

CMcDonald_Instagram for Business Update_2

After that, you’ll be asked to select which Facebook page you want to connect. You must be an admin of the page you’re wanting to connect, and can only connect one Instagram Business profile and Facebook page together.

Instagram will then ask which contact information you want to pull from your Facebook page, such as customer service phone number, email address, or mailing address. A minimum of one contact is required to set up an Instagram Business profile.

Just like that, you’re set up on Instagram for Business. You can see the differences between the Business profile below.

Instagram Insights does not pull historical data, it starts collecting once an Instagram Business profile is set up.

The variations include a “Contact” button which accesses the contact info previously mentioned, the business type you have selected within Facebook, and at the top right next to your settings cog wheel is your access to Insights.

It’s important to note that Instagram Insights does not pull historical data. Rather, it starts collecting once an Instagram Business profile is set up:

If you ever want to switch back to a regular profile, you can do so in Account Settings. If you still need help, try watching this how-to video from Facebook..

The New Features

Business profiles – The look and feel of the business profile sets it apart from regular user accounts, and pulls info like contact information in from the FB, but still allows shoppable Instagram links to stay.

Insights – The types of insights offered include impressions, reach, and clicks to website on a weekly basis from an account standpoint, as well as impressions, reach, and engagement on a post-by-post basis (see below).

Promote – The same way you have the ability to “boost” posts in Facebook, you can now promote posts in Instagram as well, separate from running an Instagram ad.

Once data begins to populate, we will be able to find more insights on how to make the data actionable. Additionally, as these Business profiles roll out, we will gain more insight into the impacts that the updates have. Follow us on Twitter and the DEG blog to learn how to make the most of these features for your brand.

Do you think it's smart for a freelancer to move to the business account? I'm wondering if this will change how often posts are seen in newsfeeds on IG, as they've done with FB Page organic reaches.

Hi Suzanne! If you're active on both Facebook and Instagram as a freelancer, it seems like it would do more good than potential harm at this point. If your Instagram account is more personal, however, you might want to wait to see what the impacts are before switching. If you do choose to switch to Instagram for Business and want to switch back to a User Account at a later time, that's an option as well!

It seems easy, but I don't have an option "switch to business account" in my instagrram app. Do you know why it might be missing out?

The feature is being rolled out gradually to users. Although it's not an official fix, one thing we found that worked was to go to your Facebook Page settings, then to Instagram Ads. Connect your Instagram page to your Facebook Business page, shut down Instagram then try again. This doesn't actually run any ads, it just connects your Facebook and Instagram pages so they recognize each other. This isn't necessarily a foolproof plan, but it did work for us!

Hi there, I'm sorry this isn't working for you! Facebook did mention that this was being progressively rolled out - so it's possible it just hasn't hit your account yet. Keep an eye out!

We are also concerned that switching our business instagram account to a recognized business account will impact us negatively in the long term- just like it does on Facebook (business page vs regular page where your posts do not get seen by your page likes unless you pay big $ to boost every single post). We are not going to make the switch at this point.
    • Chelsea McDonald

This really depends on how you look at it. Changes in the algorithm over time are intended to improve the experience for the user, giving them the content they're most likely to engage with. At this time, it's too soon to tell what the long-term effects are going to be, but there is an option in your settings to switch back to a Personal User account.

We have not heard of this happening, Leah, but Instagram did have some issues last week. You might try deleting and re-installing the app.

Hi Andreina, What a bummer! I'm not sure if there are any official ways to switch back at this time. Have you tried connecting your Instagram account to your Facebook page through the page settings, Instagram Ads section? You can do this without running any ads, then shut Instagram down and try again.

Hi About 2 weeks ago I linked my Facebook page to my instagram account through instagram ads section And I'm waiting...waiting and waiting till now but that option didn't appear in my instagram Do you have any idea about how much more I should wait to switch my account ? Does it depends on my country? Or how much are my followers? ( I don't know if I had any mistakes in my passage My English is not really good) Thanks for your complete answers to comments,I read them every day By the way I think the way is to wait patiently
    • Chelsea McDonald

      8 months
Hi Negin, At this time, I'm not aware of any other ways to connect your account or to get the prompt to show up. Facebook noted that this feature should be available to businesses of all sizes, so follower count shouldn't be an issue. The features are gradually being rolled out in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, and other countries will follow throughout the year. I think you are right - patiently waiting might be your best option, but definitely keep an eye out!

Have you tried connecting through the settings of the Facebook Page? If this does not work, the feature may not be rolled out to your third account just yet.

I just activated my account into a business but suddenly I decided to switch into personal for just a second. But when I came back to switch into business again the option disappeared. Do you know how to activate my account into a business again?
    • Chelsea McDonald

Hey Manuel, I'm not sure there's any official way to troubleshoot this, but you might try going to the Settings of the Facebook Page, then Instagram Ads and connecting the Instagram account to that Facebook Page. Then shut out of Instagram and try again.

I did this step by step but realized it was for the wrong Instagram account. How do I change it to my primary Instagram account? I've already turned off if for business on the wrong account but now in the account I want it in, there is no option to switch to a business profile. I've sent feedback to Instagram but have yet to hear back or get a resolution. Do you know anything about this?

Hey Pedro, my guess would be that prior to switching to Instagram for Business, you had your Instagram connected to your personal profile for sharing. Try disconnecting Facebook from Instagram under Settings > Linked Accounts > Facebook, then connecting your Instagram account to your Facebook Page through Page Settings > Instagram Ads. This won't run ads, it just connects the Instagram Business and Facebook Page together. Hope this helps!

We cannot speak on behalf of Facebook but have you gone into your Facebook Page > Settings > Instagram Ads and connected there? You have to have an Ads Account to run promotions on Facebook and Instagram.

Jen, you shouldn't lose any content or followers, but some brands have seen changes in engagement since switching to the Business page. Some see higher, some see lower, and it largely impacted by the algorithm.

I have two Instagram accounts (one personal, one business) that I manage at the same time. If I connect my business IG to my Facebook Business page (managed currently from my personal Facebook) will this send any notifications to my contacts on either my personal IG or personal FB or do they remain totally seperate?

HI there! I recently started blogging, and after about 10 posts, I couldn't tag anymore on my pictures (clothing brands, etc...)...does anybody know why this could be the case? it's BeachesandBaubles...so you can see it's not spammy looking. I contacted Instagram but no response...would switching to a business profile allow me to tag?
